How I Pick Winning Products

A winning product forgives a lot of mistakes. A bad one punishes perfect execution. Here are the 7 filters I run before a single dollar of ad spend touches a product.

How I Pick Winning Products

I have launched enough products to know one thing for certain: the product picks the ceiling, the marketing just decides how fast you hit it. A great product forgives mediocre ads, a clumsy page, and a rookie mistake or two. A bad product punishes flawless execution. So before I fall in love with anything, before I write a hook or build a page, it has to clear seven filters.

1. It has a wow factor, or it solves a real problem

The best products make someone stop mid-scroll and go "wait, what is that." Either it triggers a strong emotion (surprise, desire, relief) or it solves a problem sharp enough that the viewer feels it. If your gut reaction to the product is a shrug, the customer's will be too. No hook rescues a boring product.

2. It feels unavailable anywhere else

If someone can grab it off a shelf at their local store, you are competing on price and convenience, two games a new store loses. I want products that feel like you can only get them here. Perceived unavailability is what makes impulse buyers act now instead of "maybe later," and later never comes.

3. The margin leaves room for ads

This is where most people die. If a product sells for barely more than it costs, there is no room to pay for traffic. I want to sell at roughly 3 to 5 times my product cost, because that spread is my ad budget. It ties straight to break-even CPA: selling price minus product cost minus fees is what I get to spend acquiring each customer. A $15 product sold at $19 gives me nothing to work with. The same product at $49 gives me a real war chest. Price for ad room, and read the pricing playbook before you set the number.

4. It ships light and clean

Heavy, fragile, or oversized products bleed you on shipping and refunds. Light and durable means cheaper fulfillment, faster delivery, fewer breakages, and fewer angry messages. Boring, but it protects every other number on this list.

5. Broad appeal, sharp angle

The market has to be big enough that TikTok can find buyers cheaply, but the pitch has to be specific enough to stop the right person. "A gadget for everyone" is a dead ad. "The thing that fixes the one annoying part of your morning" sells. Broad audience, narrow angle.

6. Validate demand before you commit

Feelings are not data. Before I build anything, I check whether the demand is real: what is trending on TikTok, what is running in the ad libraries, how competitors are pushing it. If nobody is selling it, that is sometimes opportunity and often a warning that the market already tried and passed. I want signal, not a hunch.

7. Check saturation, not just demand

Demand and saturation are different questions, and people only ask the first. A product can be in massive demand and still be a terrible pick because ten stores already own the market and your CPMs will pay for their head start. This is exactly where the order-number trick earns its keep: if three competitors are each pushing 200-plus orders a day, the pond is fished out. If the volume is modest and climbing, the wave is still building and there is room to ride it.

A product that clears all seven is rare, and that is the point. When one does, I do not hesitate, I move to the 4-day scaling system and let the data do the rest. Most products fail two or three filters, and knowing that in ten minutes saves you the two weeks and the ad budget you would have spent finding out the hard way.

The order of operations

Filters 1 through 5 you can judge from the product itself in about ten minutes. Filters 6 and 7 take a little research but cost almost nothing. Run them in order and kill fast: the moment a product clearly fails margin or saturation, move on without sentiment. The goal is not to fall in love with a product. It is to find the one that was going to win anyway, and get out of its way.
