If you sell to the US, your For You Page is your research department. It is where you spot winning products, hooks, and trends days before your competitors who are stuck watching their home-country feed. The problem: TikTok geolocates you the second you open the app, and a feed full of your local content is useless for reverse-engineering what sells in America.
So I retrain the algorithm. Below is the exact play I am running right now to get a feed fully locked onto US trends and creators. It takes about a week of light daily reps, and after that TikTok treats the account as US-based.
iPhone only. TikTok reads device, network, and account signals together, and the iOS steps below line them all up cleanly. The same logic works on Android but the SIM and eSIM controls differ enough that I do not run it there.
The signals TikTok reads (why the order matters)
TikTok does not guess your location from one thing. It triangulates: your SIM or carrier, your IP address, your device region and language, and your watch behavior. If those disagree (US region but a Bangladeshi SIM and local IP), it trusts the hardware and network over your settings. The whole play is about making every signal say the same thing: United States.
The setup: get every signal aligned before you watch a single video
- Delete TikTok completely. Fresh start. You want none of the old location cache or session data carrying over.
- Switch your iPhone Language & Region to United States. Settings, General, Language & Region. This is a device-level signal TikTok reads on install.
- Turn on a US VPN before reinstalling. Use a premium one, free VPNs leak and get flagged. I run Surfshark. Connect to a US server and keep it on the entire time you use the account.
- Remove the network's home-country fingerprint. Take out your physical SIM and disable your eSIM. A live local SIM tells TikTok your real carrier country and quietly overrides the VPN. No SIM, no contradiction. Run on Wi-Fi through the VPN.
- Reinstall TikTok and create a brand-new account. New email, not one tied to your old local account. The account is born inside a US environment, which is exactly what you want.
The training: teach the algorithm who you are
Now behavior does the rest. The FYP is a mirror; it becomes whatever you consistently engage with. So you consistently engage like your target customer.
- Search your way in. Do not wait passively for the feed to guess. Search the keywords, niches, and product categories you care about, and watch that content fully.
- Reject everything off-target. The moment a video does not match the vibe you want, hold and tap Not interested. Negative signals train the algorithm as fast as positive ones.
- Adopt the persona of your buyer. I run mine as an 18 to 30 year old American woman, because that is who buys from the brands I am researching. Watch the videos she would watch, like a few, leave a nice comment here and there, and save the ones worth revisiting. Watch time, likes, comments, and saves are the four strongest signals, in roughly that order.
- Repeat daily for about a week. Short honest sessions beat one marathon. After roughly seven days of consistent US-coded behavior, TikTok has locked the account in and your FYP is all US trends and creators.
What matters and what does not
| Signal | Weight | Why |
|---|---|---|
| VPN kept on every session | Critical | One session on your real IP can undo days of training |
| SIM out / eSIM off | Critical | A live local SIM silently overrides the VPN's country |
| Watch time and saves | High | The strongest behavioral signals of genuine interest |
| Device region and language | Medium | Read at install, reinforces the network signals |
| Likes and comments | Medium | Helpful, but cheap to fake, so weighted below watch time |
Why this beats just buying a US ad account
Research and advertising are two different jobs. A US-coded FYP is your radar; it shows you what is winning before you spend a dollar. Once you have found a product and angle here, the money side lives in the 4-day scaling method, and if an account ever gets flagged, the unban playbook gets you back up. Keep the research feed and the ad accounts separate. One finds the signal, the other spends against it.
Reminder: this is for organic research and trend-spotting. Keep it clean, keep the VPN on, and do not mix this device or account with your ad manager logins, same discipline as running separate infrastructure per ad account.
