There is a report in your Shopify dashboard that tells you, for free, exactly why people are not buying. Most store owners never open it, then wonder why their conversion rate is stuck. It is the abandoned checkout report, and it is a confession: every abandoned cart is a customer who wanted the product enough to start buying, then hit something that made them quit.
Why it is the most honest data you have
Ad metrics tell you if people are interested. The abandoned checkout report tells you why interested people did not become buyers. When your CTR and CPC are green but the sales are not coming, the leak is almost always here, at the checkout, not in the ad. That is the exact scenario from my diagnosis table: good traffic, no conversion, the website is the problem.
The number one leak: shipping shock
If people are abandoning right at the shipping step, you have shipping-cost shock. Someone commits to a $40 product in their head, then a $12 shipping fee appears and the deal suddenly feels different. They leave. The fix is not free shipping, it is smart shipping psychology: a visible, believable fee that keeps the product price low, which I break down in the pricing playbook. Watch where in the funnel people drop, and the report points you straight at it.
The other usual suspects
- Surprise fees at the end. Any cost that appears only at checkout, taxes, handling, feels like a bait and switch. Show it early or bake it in.
- Forced account creation. Making someone sign up before they can pay adds friction at the worst possible moment. Guest checkout, always.
- Too few payment options. No Apple Pay, no Shop Pay, no PayPal means anyone without a card handy leaves. Every missing option is a slice of abandoned carts.
- Slow or clunky checkout. Every extra second and every extra field bleeds buyers. Fewer steps, faster load.
Fix the leak before you chase the cart. A recovery email that drags someone back to the same broken checkout just gets abandoned twice. Plug the hole first, then recovery flows work on a checkout that actually converts.
The routine
Once a week, open the report and ask one question: where are they quitting, and what is at that exact step? The answer is rarely mysterious. It is a fee, a form, a missing payment button, or a shipping number that broke the spell. Fix that one thing, watch the number, repeat. Your abandoned checkouts are the cheapest CRO consultant you will ever hire.
